Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, is a free ASCII (or with a tileset) open source, zombie based, rogue-like, set in a post-apocalyptic New England. You begin the game as a survivor in a scenario of your choice in a randomly generated world, from then on, your only task is to survive and eventually be free to do whatever you want, like to build a base and custom vehicle, or even become a mutated, solar powered, mess. This game is very open to do almost anything, except first; you must survive.

Terraria is a 2D action sandbox game where you can shape the world in whichever way you want. Basically MineCraft in 2D, but better! You can do so much more, and in my opinion, the pixel art looks better than what MineCraft has to offer. Definitely check this game out, the final update is coming soon too!

RimWorld

RimWorld is a 2D sandbox simulation building game with an "AI storyteller", that generates random events to test your colony and eventually lead to your doom, except if you manage to escape. You start the game as three survivors from an escape pod landing on a randomly generated planet at the edge of the known galaxy. Your duty is to build a new spaceship and escape the planet, while facing waves of enemies.

Kerbal Space Program is a flight simulator, but this time you're not flying around on earth, but to space! You construct space rockets or space planes and send them into space to research the solar system. At the beginning, you struggle to leave the atmosphere, but later, you'll be doing trips to the Mun and beyond! That's right a Mun not Moon.
