Terraria

Terraria is a 2D action sandbox game where you can shape the world in whichever way you want. Basically MineCraft in 2D, but better! You can do so much more, and in my opinion, the pixel art looks better than what MineCraft has to offer. Definitely check this game out, the final update is coming soon too!

Before beginning the game in Terraria, you have to create the world. All you get to pick is the name and size of this world. This will generate a landmass with semi randomly placed biomes. A world will always have a certain amount of certain biomes, for example; you will always have two oceans and a jungle. But they may appear in a different place, and could be a different size. Sometimes the world might not have certain biomes, it can only have one "evil" biome, Crimson or Corruption. You might also not get "pyramids" to be created either, which has a very low chance of being made. One problem you may encounter is the repeated generation of worlds to create something that is missing in another world. Luckily, your character can travel between worlds with all their gear.

In Terraria you will come across many interesting biomes, you can encounter flying islands, dungeons, spider caves, bee hives and many many more. Each one contains unique enemies and items you are able to find. Some can only be found in certain locations or by luck. If you generate a "Huge World" then you may have trouble finding those really small, rare biomes, spider caves are tough to come across, or even bee hives in a very large jungle.

To find anything in Terraria, you're going to need to go exploring. Either by digging down and creating your own network of tunnels, or walking around the cave networks and tunnels randomly generated around the world already. You're going to need to dig eventually as you won't find everything by just exploring the already open passages. You will end up finding loads of interesting sites under and above the world. You can come across ruins and even special locations with unique items.

As you progress in Terraria you will begin to attract "NPCs" or characters who will help you by proving shops and tips to your character. The first NPC you meet is the guide, who provides a short tutorial when you begin the game. Other characters provide very useful items, but not everything is available in their shops to begin with. By simply progressing in your game and continuing to do new things, you may notice the shops stocking up with more and more things.

The shops in Terraria will contain many many useful items for your character, from crafting materials for special items, to simply said, junk that doesn't do anything except act as a decoration. You will find plenty of stuff to help your game tremendously.

One of the first things you may notice in Terraria is a bunch of blobs trying to attack you. Combat takes place pretty simply, the enemy will try to touch you, or use a ranged attack. That will damage you and knock you back. You fight them by swinging your weapon, or using a ranged attack. It may sound simple, but it gets harder later on when the enemies have more special abilities and you will start to begin dodging attacks very often. Some of the later enemies and bosses do massive amounts of damage and avoiding them is the only way to begin to win. Enemies tend to attack in patterns and leave openings, but not all of them.

Something you will be doing in Terraria often is crafting! a simple thing to do too! no need for years of experience to be able to forge a sword or anything, your character is truly a master of all trades. By collecting the required materials and standing next to a "workshop", you can create certain items. For a sword, you will need to mine some ore, smelt it into bars, and then forge it. For those tasks you would need a pickaxe to go mining, a smelter to melt the ore, and an anvil to create the sword. Later on the amount of steps will increase tremendously, end game items will require the rarest items that you have to get from all corners of the world and slay countless enemies for rare crafting materials. Some of the more powerful items require that you improve them as the game goes on, with each step asking for rarer materials.

To find anything in this world, you're going to need to go digging. Digging down into the earth, you will end up finding open caverns. As you go deeper, you will need to start placing torches to light the place up. You may begin to see various ores and gems that you should dig up. Tougher enemies will spawn as you go deeper and deeper. You may end up noticing that certain ores and stone can't be dug. Using the ores that you can dig, you must forge a better pickaxe. This creates a sort of leveling system. I personally like the idea that your character is powerful based on your equipped items instead of levels, like in other RPGs. While as a side effect, you may end up grinding to find certain materials a little too often later on, not finding enough ore for all the stuff you want is frustrating at times.

One of the most fun things that you will be doing, is building a fancy "house" to keep all your junk in. It will begin as a simple enough building, but later on it should become a great building with many decorations. The more you play around, the more different block types and decorations you will end up finding which will surely make your house unique.

The amount of enemies that Terraria has is amazing. Each biome has different enemies that behave differently. As you go further from your starting location and deeper, you will meet new challenges, some areas are much tougher than others. The evil areas and the jungle being some of the toughest places, and don't forget about those [SPOILER] biomes that exist with the toughest enemies.

Terraria features many many bosses to fight in the game that you have to defeat in order to progress further. All of the bosses are generally different from one another and offer the ability to fight the same boss again and again to gain the various amount of "loot", some of which are quite rare (or grindy). I think the bosses are truly well done and offer tonnes of fun to be had.

Multiplayer is also available, it has all the features of single player, except other players are around. With friends you can do things much faster and have twice as much fun. With good friends you can have much much more fun, together it is easier to build fancy constructions and take on multiple bosses at once.

Later on you will come across certain "events", which could be a solar eclipse, or a full moon. Even pirate invasions. These events can occur randomly or be forced to happen with certain items. There are also events that only occur with the use of an item and provide something to do when you reach the end game. These events are usually endless waves of enemies and bosses which drop better and better loot while you continue to survive and complete waves.

Conclusion:

This is a game that will provide hours and hours of fun. It is actually longer than you may suspect with new things to do as you complete previous tasks. Later this year, the "final" update will release and it will be said to be "complete". You better begin now, as the new features will be end game content. You should begin playing now, as by the time the end game comes around, the new content should finally arrive!

Get it here!
It is available on many platforms. The PC version has the most features and is the best choice, if you don't happen to have a PC, it is also available for almost everything else, even Android.
