Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2 is a four player first person shooter with the goal of the game being to fight through a massive amount of AI controlled zombies and reach the end of a set of missions. You fight a range of different zombies as well, from simple acid spitting zombies, until tough to kill "tanks", giant muscle bound beasts that takes a team to kill. If you don't work as an effective team, you will be separated and torn to shreds by the horde, an unending horde.

The zombies take only a good single shot to kill, but when fifty charge at once, you must work with your team to survive. If you lose a team member, then it becomes much more challenging. Some zombies use attacks, like grapples, that hold you down, if another team member doesn't shoot the attacker, then you will be killed without question. The game does a good job at keeping an enemy almost always on screen, so you are never left with a dull moment.

The amount of challenge you will have all depends on the difficulty setting, which only affects zombie damage and nothing else. You have 4 to choose from, the easiest difficulty is almost more of a sandbox with enemies that do hardly any damage, while the hardest difficulty, you can get one shot killed by some of the tougher zombies and team work is a must. The amount of fun you can have all depends on this setting, I personally like a tougher game and played it with the highest difficulty. I tried the easier ones too and can tell you that it is a much more fun experience when the zombies are actually a threat. I would recommend for first time players to not pick "normal" but instead "advanced", it won't be extremely hard, but slightly more challenging then "normal".

When starting out you may notice that all levels are unlocked, you should definitely start from the start to get into the game. Later it gets much more "tougher", and besides it has a story it follows which is mostly chatter between the characters which is quite funny at times. If you skip ahead you might not understand the references that the characters talk about sometimes from previous levels.

The combat against the unending horde is quite thrilling, having to slay about five hundred zombies per level and even more on other levels. The only thing I wish is that the guns had even more ammo, sometimes it feels like you're reloading too often and missing out on the action. The game has over 30 weapons, which I think is enough to not feel like you are using the same thing over and over again. They aren't all that different from one another, but they all have unique models and slightly different features. For example the AK-47 has a forty round magazine and is automatic, while the M4 has fifty rounds but shoots bursts of 3 bullets. It all kills the undead effectively, but some just feel better to use.

Now shooting endless hordes of zombies is fun and stuff, shooting "mutated" zombies is even better. We have "Hunters" who pin you to the ground, "Jockeys" who pounce on you and ride you, "Spitters" who spit acid, "Smokers" with long tongues that grab you, "Bloats" which vomit zombie attracting goo and a whole bunch of other rarer mutants which cause a whole host of fun. One person cannot face a mutant without being grabbed and being powerless to escape.

The zombies also have damageable bodies, with various shots, the body gets damaged and falls apart. A well placed shot can shoot off an arm, or my favourite, the intestines getting spread on the ground. My only complaint is that the gore and bodies disappear much too quickly to take in the sights.

The only problem Left 4 Dead has is that, if playing a single player game, your computer controlled buddies don't throw grenades, use melee or help you with carrying stuff, like filling a generator you need say 10 jerry cans, you need to bring all of them yourself. But it isn't a problem with a multiplayer game, except when you end up with an ineffective team mate or worse, a player that ruins your game on purpose.

Conclusion:

It's a damn fun game which anyone can have fun with, if the gore is too much for you, you can turn it off in the settings. Each level has random placement of mutant zombies and weapons so replaying it will be slightly different. Sometimes the random mutant placement makes it impossible to survive, when a "tank" attacked us in a small room with no escape it didn't end well for us, but moments like that make it that much more fun.

Get it here!
